CINEMATIC WEDDING FILM · MUGUR MARIN

Nicoleta & Daniel — when time stands still

Five locations in a single day, two videographers working with Ronin stabilisers and two cinematic ideas I wanted to make happen. They worked. But the most demanding creative decision came later, in the editing room.

Two moving cameras and a long day

We filmed at home, at church, in a park, in the metro and at the reception. Given the complexity of the day, I worked with my friend and fellow videographer Lucian Pălăgeanu. We each operated a camera on a Ronin stabiliser, supported by fixed cameras and drone footage, including an aerial view as the couple left the church.

The people freeze. The camera keeps moving.

In the metro corridors, I directed a sequence inspired by the cinematic idea of freezing time. The participants stopped moving while I continued travelling between them with the camera on a Ronin. We created the effect on location, through direction and movement, not later with a digital trick.

The second idea was a waltz begun in the metro and visually continued at the restaurant. We filmed the first part precisely because I already knew how I wanted the two places to connect in the edit.

When a finished edit isn't yet the right film

An initial cinematic version had already been assembled as part of our collaboration. By then, I had worked through the hours of footage for the longer event film. I knew how much exceptional material was available and felt the short film could go further.

I chose to rebuild the cinematic edit personally from the beginning, reviewing the scenes and finding a different selection and rhythm. Lucian offered some useful suggestions along the way. This wasn't about competing with a colleague. It was about not stopping at the first result when I believed the footage could tell a stronger story.

The lesson I kept from this project is simple: what matters is not only what you shoot, but the patience to discover what deserves to remain.
